22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
God is love the Bible declares ...(1 John 4:8,16) - the personification of perfect love. Such love surpasses our powers of understanding (Eph. 3:19). Love like this is everlasting (Jer.31:3), free (Hos.14:4), sacrificial (John 3:16), and enduring to the end (John 13:1)
1 John 4
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.
3 The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee.
4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
Two Greek words for love appear in the Bible. Depending on the context, they may express distinct meanings. Pheleo can mean "to have ardent affection and feeling," while agapao can denote to "to have esteem" or "high regard." The warm word agape is the characteristic term of Christianity. This word for love is used several different ways in the Bible.
1. Agape love indicates the nature of the love of God toward His beloved Son (John 17:26), toward the human race generally (John 3:16, Rom. 5:8), and toward those that believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:21).
2. Agape love conveys God's will to His children about their attitude toward one another. Love for one another was a proof to the world of true discipleship (John 13:34-35).
3. Agape love also expresses the essential nature of God (1 John 4:8). Love can only be known by the actions it prompts, as seen in God's love in the gift of His Son (1 John 4:9-10). Love found its perfect expression in the Lord Jesus. Christian love is the fruit of the Spirit of Jesus in the believer (Gal.5:22).
We understand love as an emotion, but God's love is his character. His love is his identity, His nature, His character, His love is Himself. This kind of love is not just a feeling, but a person. This love is not something.... but someone. When we talk about God's love as given by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5) we are talking about God's character.
5 And hope maketh not ashemed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
A person can suffer greatly for religion... working diligently, giving in everything to the poor, going above and beyond what may be required of them, even to the point of sacrificing their life; Yet the bible says that if I don't have the love of God it, profits me nothing. Paul explains what God has revealed about His love by the Holy Spirit in (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
1 Corinthians 13
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
4 Charity suffereth long. God's love suffers long. It is patient, never gives up, ever. God will never give up on you, even when you give up on others, even when you give up on yourself... Jesus will never leave or forsake you.
His love is kind. It is not inconsistent...always serving others.
Envieth not. God's love is never jealous. There isn't a trace of jealousy in His love.
Vaunteth not itself. His love is humble. It doesn't parade, praise, or talk about itself all the time.
God's love is not puffed up. It's not swollen up with pride.
God's love Doth not behave itself unseemly. It is always polite, never rude, but always courteous.
Seeketh not her own...His love is unselfish.
Is not easily provoked. Never bitter, never retaliates, never seeks revenge...only seeks the good of others.
Thinketh no evil. Never irritated or resentful. His love doesn't keep track when offenses are committed against it.
Rejoiceth not in iniquity. It does not take delight in sin. This love is holy, eternally.
Rejoiceth in the truth. Truth is the heart of this love. Truth is always present in this love...there is no lie in it.
Beareth all things. Nothing is to difficult or impossible for this love.
Believeth all things. Believes the best about you...sees no wrong in you.
Hopeth all things. Always positive and hopeful.
Endureth all things the bible says. He will never leave His own. This love is eternal. This love endures all sufferings, endures all punishments, endures all insults, endures all rejections, endures everything...Nothing will affect this love. The bible says that this love will never fail.
Love is like oil to the wheels of obedience. It enables us to run the way of God's commandments (Psalm 119:32). Without such love, we are as nothing (1 Cor. 13:3). Such Spirit-inspired love never fails (1 Cor. 13:8) but always flourishes.
Blessings to all...
